U.S.A. Re-entries (Double Transfers) Return to Index Return to Listings Page NOTE: This page is due for a major overhaul, during which it will be broken up into a number of pages and the items arranged by Scott numbers. Until then, you will have to jump around somewhat to find particular issues, although they are now all arranged in Scott number order, except for the first four items. Unfortunately, with the addition of new items, my numbering system has been altered accordingly. |

U.S.A. Scott #505 1917 Perf 11 Foreign Entry 5¢ on 2¢ (1 & 2 of 3) Plate Positions 7942 UL 74 & 84 This is one of my very favourite errors. This is one of three plate positions where the 5¢ design was inadvertently rolled in to correct three impressions on the 2¢ plate. Several elements of the 2¢ remain visible in each of the positions. These are normally collected in blocks of 12 and 9 with the error(s) in the centre, but sometimes the sheets were actually broken up into pairs and singles. I have a pair, also. ----- Look below for my newest acquisition ... my block of 12 containing TWO examples together! Following that is my block of 9 showing the single example in the centre. |
Note the distinguishing features of each of the three positions, shown below. ![]() ![]() (The above two scans are taken from the ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PLATE VARIETIES ON U.S. BUREAU-PRINTED POSTAGE STAMPS by Loran C. French, Bureau Issues Association, Inc., 1979, page 84.) ^ From the RETrimble Collection ^ Above is a gorgeous block of 12 containing TWO of the 5¢ 'error of colour' stamps, one above the other. The upper one is pp7942UL74 (as in my pair), while the one beneath it is pp7942UL84. I am absolutely delighted to say that this wonderful piece does belong to me. I recently (October 2010) added this incredible block of 12 to my collection. ^ Above is a pair that was separated from the sheet (with a close-up below). This position is the upper stamp in the vertical pair, 7942 UL 74 ^ ^ From the RETrimble Collection ^ |

* | U.S.A. Scott #569 30¢ Bison Double Transfer ( Re-entry) Plate Position Unknown This is a new double transfer I have not seen before on this U.S. Bison stamp! It tuned up on eBay recently (June 2013) and I was fortunate to win it. The doubling is much more subtle than the above two examples, with the main detail in and around the lower right numeral area. There are a couple of marks in the lower left numeral and background circle. Note the extra line in the 'E' of POSTAGE and the upper right spandrel, with the right frameline extending up into the upper margin. There are similar marks in the upper left spandrel design. Faint markings are also seen through 'STATES' at the top and 'CENTS' at the bottom. Surprisingly, the late Loran 'Cloudy' French did not list this DT in his 'ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PLATE VARIETIES ON U.S. BUREAU-PRINTED POSTAGE STAMPS' published in 1979 by the Bureau Issues Association, Inc. I was sure I would find it there, but it must not have been known at the time.

U.S.A. Scott #2875 1994 |
Michael D. Smith has submitted two articles that he has written on the various double transfers that occured on the 1994 Bureau of Engraving & Printing Souvenir Sheets. The first concerns The Major Double Transfer from Sheet 1 (of 9), Position #4. Part One - Page 1 (Pages 1-3 of his article) Part One - Page 2 (Pages 4-6 of his article) The second article covers the other, more minor, double transfers that can be found.

From here on, all items are arranged by Scott number order, until I get the rest of the page divided up into a number of separate pages. |

* | U.S.A. Scott #2(C) 10¢ Black A Major Re-entry (Double Transfer) Plate Position 2R1 This major double transfer shows doubling in the upper and lower portions of virtually all of the lettering, as well as the lower left of the portrait oval. Obviously, the stamp is not tied to the cover, and indeed was sold to me as a “replica”! (I could never afford a genuine re-entry such as this.) I know almost nothing about USA ‘replicas’ or forgeries and I was amazed that re-entries / double transfers were forged as well as ‘normal’ stamps! I have compared this to ‘real’ examples of the TEN CENTS 2R1 using Google and find it to be an amazing likeness. Indeed, at first I thought I had a ‘real thing’! I anyone viewing this can provide me with any further information about this item, I would be extremely grateful!

* | U.S.A. Scott #11e 3¢ Dull Red A Major Re-entry Plate Position 92 L I L This major double transfer shows a strong line of doubling through THREE CENTS and the centres of the rosettes at the LL & LR are completely doubled, making them look like 8's. The first example is a lovely wide bottom margin copy, while the second is another that now resides in my collection, with thanks to Earl Noss. Courtesy of Earl Noss

* | U.S.A. Scott #68 10¢ Green A Major Double Transfer This is the well-known 'TAG' double transfer showing strongly in POSTAGE. It is somewhat unusual due to the 'smudgeiness' of the details. Notice that a more minor DT can be seen in the LR corner.

U.S.A. Scott #210 1883 2¢ Red Brown Major Double Transfer This is a lovely double transfer showing strongly throughout much of the design, particularly in the lettering. This wee cover was simply described on eBay as having "a line through T-E variety." The cover is shown below the close-up scans.

* | U.S.A. Scott #231 1893 2¢ Columbian Expo A Major Misplaced Entry This When I first saw this stamp in a lot on eBay, my first thought was that it was likely a kiss print, it was SO incredibly doubled! However, my mind was quickly changed a moment later when I looked at another stamp in the same lot...There was a SECOND copy with the exact same doubling! So, the doubling is REAL, not just a slip or kiss print! The shift is a good 0.6mm, qualifying it for 'misplaced entry' status. A truly OUTSTANDING stamp! And that's not all that was in the same lot...Have a look at the stamp below...

Scott #231 1893 2¢ Columbian Expo Major Re-entry This is a double transfer of major proportions, with a marked upwards shift showing strong doubling in UNITED STATES, the left '2,' 'POSTAGE T' and in and above 'LANDING OF COLUMBUS.' Courtesy of Peter Lenk I am pleased to report that another of the great stamps in the lot of 5 that I mention above was a copy of the stamp reported here some time ago by Peter Lenk. It's nice to have a second copy to prove constancy.

* | U.S.A. Scott #332 2¢ Carmine Major Re-entry Plate Position Unknown This is a lovely double transfer with evidence of a normal re-entry in several spots, such as the U in U.S. POSTAGE, the UL and LR sides of the portrait oval, and the T and S of TWO CENTS, along with the LR corner of the LR frameline. However, there is also a possible dropped transfer roll in the lower portion of the design, with an errant design element through the lower right part of the outer right frameline, a horizontal line through the ribbon above the T of CENTS, and the heavy mark in the C of CENTS.

This stamp is also illustrated in Loran C. French's book, ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PLATE VARIETIES ON U.S. BUREAU-PRINTED POSTAGE STAMPS, Bureau Issues Association, Inc., 1979, page 100, Fig. #499 - 6. * | U.S.A. Scott #557c 1924 5¢ Blue A Major Re-entry Plate 15571, Position 86, Upper Left Pane As documented in The American Philatelist, Vol. 89, No. 11, November 1975, pp1019-1021, this amazing complete Double Transfer was not even discovered until 1974, when a copy was cherry-picked out of an APS Circuit Book. It was on a Canal Zone overprinted stamp, Sc. #86, and when first discovered it was thought by some to be a double impression. This was proven to be untrue when a member of the APS expert committee found a pair in his own collection, one with the double transfer and one without. The upper illustration is one that was prepared for use in the AP, while the lower one is a scan taken from the AP page. Unfortunately, I do not have a copy of the real thing to scan for you.
Naturally, this is WAY up there on my Want List!
