The first stamp shown below is an incredible example of what can happen if the plate maker is not careful! |

Scott #61a 1881-82 Seated Helvetia 5f Inverted Double Strike Pane 1, Plate Position 28 The centre stamp of this block shows a very rare example of a true double strike, with one inverted. "This was caused by duplications occurring in the subject on the embossing plate that was used also for printing. This remarkable variety resulted from two impressions being made by the punch or its equivalent fro which the female embossing subject was produced, one normal and one inverted. Apart from the duplications in the frame (including HELVETIA, FRANCO and all four corner 5'S), the most clearly noted (inverted) features are the oval of the shield, the outline of the skirt, the spear and the forearm." I have included an inverted copy of the variety stamp, so that you might look for some of the features mentioned above. The above quote is taken from L.N. Williams' FUNDAMENTALS OF PHILATELY, Revised Edition 1990, American Philatelic Society, State College, Pennsylvania, p.431. |

Scott #228 Major Re-entry Plate Position #25 This stamp, on a picture postcard with a normal, shows beautiful, sharp doubling of the entire design! It is especially noticeable in the lettering and numeral 5 at the bottom, but the whole stamp is doubled. I have included part of the normal stamp to the left for comparison purposes. |
