QUEBEC TERCENTENARY
1¢ Green Re-entries
July 16, 1908
For a long time, there was only one re-entry cataloguded on this stamp, but now there are numerous wonderful re-entries and even misplaced entries to be found. Following are those that I know of at this time.
Please send me scans of any others you may have. (At least 1200dpi, please!) There were 4 plates used to print this stamp, so there may well be more out there!

The Major Re-entry
This is the only catalogued re-entry on this stamp so far, but there are numerous others; some majors and some misplaced entries. The Major shows strong doubling on the right side of the design, visible in the upward doubling of the UR corner of the design, in the right '1' (resembling retouching), the bottom of 1908, and in and above the 'C' of QUEBEC in the lower right corner. A block of four with selvedge attached on the left side places this stamp in the second column on the sheet of 100. The plate is not yet known, but there were 4 plates in total.

Major Misplaced Entry 1
This is a very distinctive misplaced entry showing markings in 'NA' of CANADA, 'O' of ONE, and the upper right area of Cartier's portrait oval. The position of this stamp has been narrowed down by several position pieces to the right vertical column of a plate, between #'s 40-90.

Misplaced Entry 1
There is evidence of a misplaced entry showing in 1608, the 'C' of CANADA, the left '1,' some of the letters of ONE CENT, the outer left margin, and in several places in both portrait ovals. Subtle, but nice!

Misplaced Entry 2
This one was found by Bill Burden of Nova Scotia. There is evidence of a significant misplaced entry, showing lines on the left from Cartier's garment into the white oval, as well as the central ornament between the two portrait ovals.

Misplaced Entry 3
This one is very subtle, but really interesting! There are fine lines of doubling in the bottoms of 'A P' of CANADA POSTAGE, and 'C' of CENT. There are also extentions of background lines of the portrait into the UL area of CHAMPLAIN's portrait oval, as well as extentions of the frame in the lower right of CARTIER's portrait oval.

Here is a lovely re-entry showing doubling in, above, and below the 'E' of ONE, on the lower right of Cartier's portrait in the white oval, and in and above the letters 'AIR.'

This re-entry is similar to the above one, with doubling of the lines above and below the 'E' of ONE and the ‘C’ of CENT, but it lacks all of the other doubling below that one of the portrait ovals. This one also has a constant set of vertical marks in the ‘D’ of CANADA.

Major Re-entry 4
This is a very subtle re-entry, when you first look at it! The main points that first caught my eye are the faint lines in the centres of ‘N’ of ONE and ‘E’ of CENT. A closer look, though, revealed a small group of engraved lines in the portrait oval just above the front tip of CARTIER’s cap. There is also another short line in the second band of white below the ‘E’ of ONE. Moving over to CHAMPLAIN’s portrait oval, hidden in the cancellation appear to be several more lines of green ink. Moving down to the third close-up, there again appear to be some lines of green ink hidden in the cancel in the white oval opposite the side of CARTIER’s hand, as well as a ‘hook-like’ mark protruding from the central design element.
This could well be yet another misplaced entry!

This stamp shows very interesting marks in parts of CANADA and ONE that might possibly be the result of a misplaced entry. A second copy is needed to prove constancy.

There are other examples showing extensions of the horizontal lines of the right side of the design, as well as a great many fine examples of retouching in numerous places throughout the design. I’ll try to add some of the former soon.
