NEW ZEALAND Chalon Head Re-entries 1855 - 1872 Scott #'s 1 - 50 The beautiful Chalon Head (Full Face Queen) stamps of New Zealand have been the subject of many specialized collections and studies. With the help of THE POSTAGE STAMPS OF NEW ZEALAND, published by the Royal Philatelic Society of New Zealand in 1950, I have been able to accurately plate the following items that I have recently been able to add to my collection. Scans of others are most welcome! The sheets were printed in layouts of 240 impressions, laid out in 20 rows of 12. I follow the British method of description of quoting the Row number followed by the stamp Number in the row. |

Scott #7 One Penny 1857-61 Major Re-entry Row 14, Stamp No. 12 This is a misplaced entry showing a shift to the left of 0.8mm and 0.3mm high. There is doubling of the upper frameline in the top margin, and if the stamp was centred more to the left, you would see traces of the left frameline in the margin. There are markings in NEW ZEALAND, especially of the base lines, of the hair line at the right, of the right eye, right cheek, the ribbon, and of the letters of POSTAGE and ONE PENNY. Scott #7 One Penny 1857-61 Major Misplaced Entry Row 18, Stamp No. 6 This is a major misplaced entry showing a faulty impression to the left of 6.5mm and 0.25mm high. There is a portion of the top frameline with the right corner doubled, the downstroke reaching the 'L' of ZEALAND. A line of colour, corresponding to a portion of the heavily engraved base line of ZEALAND, cuts the 'W' of NEW, along with a clear stoke in the 'Z' from the lettering above. There are spots of colour in the letters 'O E P E' of ONE PENNY at the bottom.

*41 | Scott #36 Six Pence 1864-71 The Major Re-entry Row 17, Stamp No. 10 This is considered to be one of the finest New Zealand re-entries, which is actually a Misplaced Entry. The design is shifted 2.25mm low and 0.2mm to the right. Note the upper frameline passing through 'W ZEA', a line through the centre cross of the crown, and parts of the lettering of NEW ZEALAND throughout the upper portrait. The 'D' on the right is particularly strong, as are parts of the 'N' on the left. There are marks on the face, strong markings on the shoulder on the left, parts of the ribbon and circle at the lower right quadrant, and many, many small markings in the lettering and value tablets. The right vertical frameline is doubled out in the right margin, and there are numerous markings in the bottom margin below SIX PENCE. These marks also extend into the design of the stamp below (Row 18, No. 10). Unfortunately, there are some perforation problems on the left side, but these re-entries are most difficult to find in any condition. If you scroll down below the scan of the stamp, I have included a diagram of the details, Courtesy of The Royal Philatelic Society of New Zealand.
