Scott #71 Six Cents Plate Position #72 Misplaced Entry At first it may appear that this stamp has a slipped retouch in the lower right corner, but a closer examination reveals a misplaced entry. The most obvious detail is the vertical line outside the lower right frameline, but if you look up near the top of the right frame, you will see the faint remnants of the upper right corner of the design cutting across the right frameline about 4.5 spandrel lines down from the top. If you follow this across to the left, there is a corresponding line of doubling inside the outer left frameline as well. Now move down the left side and you will find a line of doubling in the ‘S’ of SIX. Below that, there is a curved diagonal line near the tip of the lower left maple leaf. The details are subtle, but unquestionable. Note: The 2006 Unitrade Specialized Catalogue lists this as an “engraver’s slip” but as we can see here, it is not. I was successful in having the listing in Unitrade changed. |
