The Major Re-entry

Plate Position #100

There are numerous areas of doubling on this, the Major Re-entry on the sheet of 100. The main distinguishing feature to look for is the doubling of the upper left vertical frameline. Notice also the many little dashes of colour in many of the letters, particularly in, above and below 'POSTAGE' and in and above 'CENTS.' Doubling of the bottoms of both digits of the lower left '17' can also be seen. Its plate position places this stamp in the lower right corner of the sheet and it can sometimes be found with large margins, or selvedge attached.

This is the second best re-entry found on this stamp. The strongest feature is the doubling in and above the GE of POSTAGE, along with DA, parts of SEVENTEEN, above the V and EN S. The guideline and dots in the top margin confirm the position.

There are slight marks found in some of the letters, doubling of the oval band at the right-centre, and a vertical unerased guideline on the right, cutting through 'TS' of CENTS and the lower right 17.

There is a line of doubling in the bottom of the fourth 'E' of SEVENTEEN, along with marks in the white oval below the 'N' next to it.

There is also an unerased vertical guideline through the right side, which matches Calder's diagrams for position 20, but he makes no mention of the apparent doubling in the 'E' or 'N.'

Misplaced Re-entry

This delightful piece was brought to my attention by William Coates of Coates & Coates. Note the interesting misplaced details in the body of the '1' of the left 17.

John MacEntyre has confirmed this stamp is found on the proof sheet, as well as the printed sheets. Isn't it odd that something so different could escape being documented until now?

The inner and outer framelines at the top are doubled. This doubling is not mentioned by Calder.
